We made it to the end of the A-Z Challenge! Whew. That was quite a wild ride, wasn’t it? Today, I’m thrilled to bring you a character from one of my all-time favorite books. Z is for…
Zachariah from The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi
When Charlotte boards the Seahawk, she thinks she’s just making the passage from England to her family’s home in America. Little does she know that the ship will change her in every way.
Zachariah, the ship’s African cook, becomes Charlotte’s first friend on board, but her wealthy nineteenth century upbringing doesn’t allow her to see his kindness. Instead, she gravitates toward Captain Jaggery, and it isn’t until later in the book when she acknowledges how important Zachariah is to her.
Zachariah has been at sea his whole life, and he’s never seen anything like the young Miss Doyle. He doesn’t judge her or attempt to force her to be anything other than herself, and in the end, it is Zachariah’s friendship which helps Charlotte transform herself. I love this mysterious, paternal character, and I love the fate that befalls him over the course of the book (no spoilers!)
