Nuts and Volts from Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
The Quarter Quell tributes from District Three, Wiress and Beetee, are jokingly referred to as “Nuts and Volts” by one of the other tributes. Wiress, “Nuts”, won a previous Hunger Game, and as a result, her mind was a bit damaged (hence the nickname). With her partner, Beetee (another former winner, “Volts” for his technical know-how), Wiress becomes vital to the story of the second book in The Hunger Games series, offering Katniss valuable information that changes the game.
I love this pair of characters. They are elderly, somewhat of a rarity in most YA, and their devotion to one another, combined with their intelligence, makes “Nuts and Volts” a pair to be reckoned with. I can’t wait to see how these two are portrayed when the movie comes out!
