Welcome to week two of the A-Z challenge!  Today, the character I picked for G is…

Gemma Doyle from A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

I love Gemma.  She reminds me of a sassier, older version of another one of my favorite characters: Mary Lenox from The Secret Garden.  Both girls grew up in India with relatively little introduction to “proper” British ways, and both girls carry a deep grief.  Unlike Mary, however, Gemma finds herself embroiled in a world where magic exists and power brings a price.

After the death of her mother, Gemma is forced to leave behind her exotic life in India.  She moves to England to a boarding school, and while there, she becomes friends with an odd assortment of girls.  As the girls dabble with magic, Gemma realizes that she might be able to bring her mother back…but at what cost?

Who is your favorite flawed hero or heroine?
